 :blue_heart: :purple_heart:

Today I wanted to pay tribute to the purple ensemble worn by Kamala Harris at yesterday’s inauguration, with a purple suit throwback of my own. The vision of our Madame Vice President taking her oath got me so emotional and at that moment I couldn’t have been more proud to be a woman, a Jamaican immigrant :flag-jm: and an American :us:.

The color Purple has long represented UNITY and has been a symbol of suffragettes since the early 1900s, paving the way for women today to create opportunities to shatter glass ceilings. So it’s no accident that in addition to Kamal Harris, some shades of purple were worn by all of the trailblazing women at yesterday’s inauguration – Michelle Obama, Hillary Clinton, Elizabeth Warren, to name a few. From this day on, I move forward with new Hope that Unity, Democracy, and Opportunity – words that were ignored in the past 4 years, will make a comeback.

And in the beautiful words of young poet Amanda Gordan:

“When day comes, we step out of the shade of flame and unafraid.
The new dawn balloons as we free it.
For there is always light, if only we’re brave enough to see it.
If only we’re brave enough to be it.”
